Embattled Prime Minister dumps decision to release Hunt Report on Home Secretary

News Alliance publishes an open letter to the Prime Minister to ask for release of the Hunt Report in the public interest:
The Prime Minister
Gordon Brown MP
10 Downing Street
London
SW1A 2AA
Dear Prime Minister,
Re: Hunt Report into the plots by officers of MI5 and the MoD to smear and overthrow the Harold Wilson governments 1967-1976
When Jim Callaghan took over from Harold Wilson as Prime Minister he ordered Lord Hunt, a former Cabinet Secretary, to investigate the MI5/MoD plots against his predecessor.
It is common knowledge, particularly on the Left, that the Hunt Report names the officers of MI5 and 'Civil Servants' and military personnel of the MoD who were involved in the illegal and unethical attempts to destroy Harold Wilson's Labour governments.
Indeed, Harold Wilson once confided to Marcia Williams, "A couple of thousand men in the Horse Guards Parade could do a lot of trouble before troops came - if they came."
There is little point in denying the existence of the Hunt Report into the Wilson Plots because there is too much material in the public domain to prove the report exists and it should now be released in the public interest to ensure that the Secret Services and MoD can never again attempt to destroy a democratically elected government.
Furthermore, what does a 'Labour' government hope to gain by concealing the Hunt Report from public inspection? The undeniable plots against the Premiership of Harold Wilson were directed against Labour governments and against the very essence of socialism in both concept and practice.
I am sure that I do not have to remind you of the potential for division even today in the modern Labour Party over this historically important issue. If you decide to withhold the Hunt Report, it will be interpreted that your 'Labour' government has betrayed the Old Guard and millions of senior Labour voters who can remember and indeed feared the machinations of the Secret State during 1967-1976.
There is nothing to be gained by withholding the Hunt Report but if your government does decide to keep this damning document locked away in some secret vault in Whitehall, the repercussions could be very divisive indeed!
You must remember that there are still a great many socialists in New Labour but their support is wavering. Would you have these hardcore supporters desert your ranks to the likes of Respect, Socialist Labour and every other Leftist faction on the fringes waiting in the wings to foment division within the mainstream Labour Party and settle its demise?
Your refusal to release the Hunt Report will be regarded as a smack in the face by the Old Guard and we will do everything within our power and ability at News Alliance to ensure that the people of this country know that your government endorses ultra-secrecy.
In effect, refusal to disclose the Hunt Report will be perceived by the public that New Labour condones the actions of the Secret State to smear and destroy democratically elected governments. This is the acid test you are now being put to and I urge you to release the Hunt Report in the public interest.
By releasing the Hunt Report, you will signal with a single action that your government does not hold with the actions of the Secret State to smear and destroy democratically elected politicians. You will also go down in history as the politician who acted bravely in the public interest.
And I urge you to act quickly on this matter because it seems perfectly clear that the game is up for New Labour and the Tories will never release the Hunt Report….
You are at the crossroads of history and the actions you take now will help to determine your place in history, as night falls on New Labour's time in office. Show the public that you have some fighting spirit left and demonstrate that the democratically elected government of Britain is not under the control of the Secret State.
By taking this step you would set a Rubicon for the future relationship between overt government and shadow government and the public will determine as a result of your actions which side of government actually rules the roost at Whitehall.
And I remind you that MI6, MI5 and the Ministry of Defence should not be allowed to dictate to the elected government as to what now happens to the Hunt Report.
But, if as I suspect, you are not prepared to release the Hunt Report, then you should set a tariff for its release. Considering that over 30 years have already elapsed, the only tariff open to government is the 50-year tariff and this would mean the Hunt Report could be released on 01 January 2027.
But if a tariff of 100 years is set on the release of the Hunt Report, this will show that MI5 and MI6 have control of the document and its release, thus signalling your lack of control over the Secret Services and in effect, demonstrate that they run this country!
You are at the crossroads of history and your next step on this matter will help determine your place in the history books as the hero or the villain.
In closing, be assured that this matter is not going to go away. Any response, or lack of response, you make to this letter will go into the public domain and be widely circulated to like-minded individuals and interested parties in the public interest….
