Do you support a Referendum on the Monarchy?

The latest figures show that the Monarchy or the House of Windsor costs us £150 million each year. Royal accountants, well-known for fiddling the books, have released accounts which state that the Monarchy costs us 'only' £37 million each year. But taking into account unpaid taxes, a huge security bill - estimated at around £100m - and costs to police forces and local councils around the country, the actual cost of the Monarchy is approximately £150 million per annum.

Our European neighbours pay only £10 million each year for their elected presidents. In Britain we have absolutely no say in the appointment of our Head of State and pay through the nose to have our democratic rights abused in this manner. And £150 million would enable the NHS to hire a further 8792 nurses at a time when they are needed more than ever!

But of even greater significance is the fact that Britain is not a fully-fledged democracy under the 'rule' of a Constitutional Monarchy. In Britain we elect just fifty per-cent of our Parliament who sit in the House of Commons. In the adjacent chamber is the House of Lords, a bastion of hereditary privilege and life peers appointed to sit in the Upper House as a pay-off for loyal service to the Establishment. The cash for honours scandal has laid open the sheer depth of the abuse of the House of Lords by members of both houses.

The majority of MPs refuse to support a Referendum on whether we should continue with an unelected Head of State. This unacceptable preclusion of our democratic rights is further evidence of the fact that Britain is not a democracy. But the growing number of Republicans are now forcing this paramount matter back onto the agenda. It is time for Britain to become a fully-fledged democracy with an elected Head of State.
